Bow River Fly Fishing Report
May 20, 2025
Brought to you by Trout Fever Fly Fishing Co.
Flows on the Bow have been bouncing up and down thanks to recent rain and unpredictable dam releases. Some days the river runs dirty, others aren’t too bad — but even the murky days have still been fishable if you play it right. Adaptability is the name of the game.
What's Working
Nymphing:
Nymphing remains one of the most consistent tactics. Larger flies like stonefly imitations, leeches, and pheasant tails are doing the job in softer seams and deeper buckets. A two-fly rig with enough weight is key to staying in the zone.
Streamer Fishing:
Streamer action has been solid, especially on inside bends and even right off the banks. Bow River Buggers, Mini Dungeons, and Clousers have been moving fish consistently.
Dry Fly:
We’re seeing fish starting to eat on top, with Blue-Winged Olives and caddis showing up in cleaner stretches. When the hatch is on and you see heads, don’t wait — fish them! It’s still early, but those evening windows are worth being ready for.
River Conditions
Clarity: Changes daily — dirty after rain or dam bumps, clearer above tributaries
Flow: Still fluctuating; expect sudden changes
Water Temperature: Mid-40s°F (approx. 7°C)
Looking Ahead
If flows stabilize, clarity will improve and dry fly activity should ramp up fast. Expect caddis to strengthen and golden stones to make a more consistent appearance. Until then, stay mobile, fish smart, and don’t sleep on the soft water.
